😱 Fear Factor 🎓

Hey Reader,

It's almost like we blinked; another school year is upon us. As we stand on the threshold of a new school year, I'm choosing to hope for a transformative change in education. Freedom dream with me: what are the two things you desire for yourself and your school community? For us to witness the transformation as educators, we have to unplug ourselves from the matrix of punitive measures as a means of instruction. Fear once considered a tool for control, only fosters an atmosphere of apprehension, hindering true learning and growth.

When fear takes center stage, it stops being about our students' development and becomes a reflection of our own frustrations and desires for retribution. Instead of nurturing their potential, we find ourselves entangled in a cycle of aversion and anxiety. Take a moment and reflect on that student from this past school year. Think about that one student who seemed to push all your buttons, testing your patience and challenging your resolve. In the heat of the moment, were you tempted to resort to fear-based tactics as a means of control? Did you find yourself using punitive measures, hoping it would lead to the change you desired in that student?

Let's be honest with ourselves and examine the outcome. Did that approach truly lead to growth and transformation in the student? Or did it inadvertently create a divide and hinder their progress? As we focus on empowering our students with compassion and understanding, we must question if our actions have centered on nurturing their potential or if they became about our own frustrations and desires for compliance.

I want to be careful here. It is essential to clarify that advocating for restorative practices does not mean dismissing the importance of respect and accountability within the classroom community. There will always be room for holding students accountable for their actions. However, let us pause and consider whether we are first looking into the mirror of accountability for ourselves. Are we examining our own approach and actions before turning the spotlight solely on our students?

True transformation begins when we challenge ourselves to model the principles of restorative practices and embrace empathy and compassion in our interactions with students. Our focus should be on empowering students with compassion and understanding, not wielding fear as a weapon.

🧪 The Science of Restorative Practices 🔬

At the heart of our transformative journey lies the science of restorative practices. These practices, grounded in empathy, accountability, and community principles, offer an alternative to punitive measures. Restorative practices focus on repairing harm, restoring relationships, and promoting healing within the learning community.

The danger of this social science is that we implement it like the old fire extinguishers. You know - in case of emergency, break glass. If we are seeking to build restorative practices with fidelity, we must build community. I define community as a space where we willingly embrace the problems of others as our own. Without this crucial component, what are we restoring each other to? You can't restore what you haven't recognized.

Research shows that when we shift away from punitive approaches and adopt restorative practices, we witness a profound impact on students' emotional well-being and academic achievement. Students feel heard and valued, leading to increased engagement and motivation in their learning journey.

🛠️ Building Connection and Trust 🧰

Restorative practices prioritize building connections and trust between students, educators, and the entire school community. By emphasizing open communication and active listening, we create a supportive network that nurtures growth and fosters a sense of belonging. Community, restorative practices extend beyond discipline; they are a way of life within our educational community. By adopting these practices, we address conflicts and harm, nurture positive interactions, and build a culture of care and respect.

Let this new school year be the dawn of a restorative journey—a journey that focuses on the growth and well-being of every learner. Know that you have a means of support on this journey. There is a real person on the other side of this email. 😉 Together, let's keep pushing for understanding, creating an educational experience that fosters true transformation and lifelong learning.

Hey Community, It's been a minute, hasn't it? Life has been lifin', and amidst the whirlwind, there have been some changes I wanted to share with you all. First, I have bittersweet news to share: I'm no longer on Instagram (let's take a moment of silence). It wasn't an easy decision, but as a recovering perfectionist and people pleaser, I realized my relationship with the platform had become unhealthy. The constant pressure of the algorithm and the culture of consumerism didn't align with my...

Hey Reader, Have you seen the viral TikTok video of the teacher speaking on the grade level of his students (click here to see the video)? It has caused quite a debate. The gaps in learning we are seeing aren't new. However, the pandemic has undoubtedly put the magnifying glass up to these preexisting inequities. This has raised the question: who is to blame? Cue the constant finger-pointing. The parents blame the teachers. The teachers blame the parents and administration. The administration...

Hey Reader, If you've ever planned an event or party, you know the pressure of ensuring everything is in place. You mull over details: Are the decorations in place? Are there enough accomodations for everyone? The process can be nerve-racking. Underneath all the emotions is this truth - how I plan for my guests communicates something about their value in my life. I am feeling all of those emotions planning for the arrival of my staff and students this year. I want to communicate that I...
